dateline: santa fe

i went on the loops ride in santa fe last night. loops is the weekly equivalent to a one stop, two beer poker ride, without the poker (like we play so much poker).

i rode the 420 (that’s the actual time) train up with matt and luap, the 2 occupiers/invaders from santa fe. 601pm…when we got off the train i was supremely pleased with myself for bringing extra layers. 615pm…we rolled out from the plaza and headed south on the rail trail. 630ish…imperial red thirty. by 845 i was back at the railyard, gnawing on some snacks from trader joe’s.

thanks to matt, luap, brannigan, ryan and all the other loops riders. i’ll be back.

next loops ride, 2.6.12, 7pm start (winter hours are over), the plaza, santa fe.

you may already be a winner

i saw this yesterday on my way up chappell drive.

as i type, they may have already restriped the road to include bike lanes (!). another thing i noticed is that they are also creating a bike underpass @ osuna in addition to the initial plan. burque is awesome.

invasion!

santa fe bike polo and loops riders will be occupying burque this coming monday! rumor has it that they’ll be arriving, 847am, @ the downtown railrunner station. from there, they’re heading to high ground by infiltrating the bus system (…and taking all the good seats) and heading to the to the lomas/tramway library. after that they might be found anywhere…the duck pond, polo courts, bike trails, the bosque and eventually back to the train to possibly catch the loops ride.

i propose a counter-attack.

1620hrs. we board the railrunner northbound. we then infiltrate their ranks and invade the loops ride and catch the 2100hrs train back to the fort.

north diversion trail upgrade

soon, crossing menaul, candelaria and commanche @ street level will be a thing of the past. undercrossings are now under construction for the meager sum of 1.8 million bucks…i wonder who gets to keep the change?

gobac…no bikes allowed

went to my first city council meeting last night. there were people calling for the firing of police chief ray schultz. there were pictures of cats. there was a city councilor that didn’t look up from his ?pad until the boob lady took the podium. there was a woman telling the councilmembers that corporations now rule the world and that even they, are already screwed.

…there were also some well-spoken members of burque’s cycling community. members of the dcwf, gabac, bikeabq all spoke before the committee, pointing out how unfriendly those 4 signs look for a bike friendly city. councilors debbie o’malley, rey garduño, isaac benton and council president trudy jones seemed to agree and also showed interest in why proper procedure wasn’t followed, and even a question of the legality of the placement of the signs. acting dir. of the municipal development dept., michael riordan, was very apologetic about not following protocol…but then non-apologetically lied to everyone there about how they meet with gabac monthly about just these sort of issues. chief administrative officer robert perry also didn’t agree, and told a personal story about crossing the bridge on the wrong road (singer rd) and later called gabac, gobac.

here’s an option, for $225.40 (free shipping), we could offer to buy the 4 signs and install them ourselves. of course that would be too easy, and probably piss off local businesses that might have made charitable ‘contributions’ to local government. i guess the proper way is to go to the next city council meeting (feb. 6th) and speak up…again.

i was told that there will be a front page article in thursdays abq journal. it’s unfortunate that it takes two people getting hit on our streets last week to create enough interest to merit a front page spot.

stop pipa, sopa and no bike signs!

i was going to black out heyfixie in support of internet freeness and such, but then i thought about the censorship of chappell dr with ‘no bike signs’.

everyone needs to know that there is a city council meeting tonight @ 5pm. in the basement of one civic plaza. representatives from gabac and duke city wheelmen plan to be there…we should too.

if you ride your bike in traffic, this affects you.

¡no bikes, no mames!

so i was riding up the n. diversion trail the other day. i rolled under i-25 in the usual fashion and made my usual left turn to get on chappell rd. and avoid all those bumpy-ass wooden bridges. shortly after passing singer rd., i see a no bikes sign for northbound traffic, then 2 more. what kinda bullshit is that? highway supply llc happens to be right across the street from the sign…and of course they sell that sign. but they didn’t put it there…although they may be part of the reason they’re there.

i found this post by local bike activists from bikeabq. they and the duke city wheelmen foundation have serious concerns about the placement of the signs. looks like i’m not the only one pissed.  from what i understand, some of the local businesses have complained about bike traffic (safety) concerns.

i don’t know the technical details, but i know that if some douchebag sees the sign…and then me riding the same road. i’m sure he/she’ll feel extra animosity towards my 2 wheeled ass.

divide and conquer.
